11 Best Flowers for Interior Design Fans

Looking to spruce up your interiors? Discover the best blooms to match your décor.

The walls have been painted, the curtains hang beautifully and your favourite pictures and ornaments are in pride of place.

There’s just one final finishing touch to the room – a stunning bouquet of lilies, a jug of roses or a billowing plant in a ceramic pot.

Whatever your interior décor style, flowers and plants are a simple and effective way to add character, beauty, warmth and fragrance to your home. A spectacular floral centrepiece in the middle of a room will set your décor off perfectly while a row of dainty vases with single stems or posies will look like a page out of a glossy interiors magazine.

Even better, you can vary your flowers and plants with the seasons. In autumn and winter choose stems like freesias, lilies, chrysanthemums, snowdrops and dahlias and in spring and summer go for daffodils, tulips, carnations, hydrangeas and roses.

Claude Monet, the celebrated French impressionist painter, adored flowers and painted hundreds of stems during his lifetime – from the iconic Water Lilies to Bouquet of Sunflowers. “I must have flowers, always, and always,” he once said – and when it comes to interior design we completely agree.

Sunflowers

Standing tall and proud, with dazzling yellow petals, sunflowers are the ideal stems to cheer up any abode. Best of all, they go with virtually every style of décor, adding a pop of colour and vibrancy to monochrome rooms and blending wonderfully with brightly-coloured interiors too.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums are universally popular – and no wonder. There are more than 150 varieties and colours to choose from so whether you like daisy-type blooms or multi-petalled pom-poms there’s something for every hue in town. The fact that chrysanthemums last for up to three or four weeks in a vase is the icing on the cake.

Roses

Romantic, sweet-smelling roses suit all kinds of décor, from formal sophistication to boho-chic. Each colour has its own special meaning so choose red for love and passion, pink for femininity and elegance, yellow for warmth and happiness, white for purity and grace, or orange for energy and enthusiasm.

Lilies

Top interior designers love using these majestic blooms. Their flamboyant, trumpet-like flowers and leafy stems lend a touch of class to your home, especially if your tastes lean to white walls and minimalist furniture. Not only that, lilies look and smell divine. Remember that lilies are highly toxic to cats though, so if you have any feline friends at home it’s best to choose other stems.

Hydrangeas

Who doesn’t love pretty as a picture hydrangeas? Their large round blooms and lace-like petals add glamour to every arrangement and their lush blues, violets, pinks and whites delight the senses. First grown in Japan, their name comes from hydro, meaning water, and angeion, meaning pitcher. Why’s that? Because their shape resembles a traditional water pitcher.

Orchids

If you’re after something long-lasting for your home then an orchid in a pot will be right up your street. Graceful and elegant, orchids bloom for three months at a time and can last for years as long as you look after them. Remember that indoor orchids should be kept in a place with bright, indirect light but away from direct sunlight.

Peonies

An arrangement of these soft, cloud-like flowers always cuts a dash. In the UK, they bloom from April to June but they’re well worth waiting for. Coral peonies appear first, followed by timeless pink peonies in early summer. First grown in China, they were brought to Europe in the early 19th century and are now on every stylist’s wish-list.

Carnations

With their delicate, ruffled petals and long stems, carnations come in a multitude of vivid colours – so whatever your colour scheme there’s a carnation to match your taste. Carnations symbolise love and devotion so if you’re moving into a new home with your partner these stunning flowers are a tip-top choice.

Swiss Cheese Plant

Swiss cheese plants, or Monstera Adansonii to give them their proper name, are design classics that never go out of fashion. With large, heart-shaped leaves that gradually develop distinctive holes, these tropical plants need indirect light, a warm, humid environment and a moderate amount of water. As long as they get all of these they’ll be very happy – and so will you.

Tradescantia

Low-maintenance and fast-growing, this is the sort of plant that appeals to interiors enthusiasts everywhere. The added bonus is that the tradescantia, with its trailing, variegated purple and green leaves, looks wonderful in a hanging basket or perched on a shelf. In fact it will look the bee’s knees wherever you put it.

Bonsai Tree

Bonsai trees symbolise peace and harmony and are often associated with relieving stress so they are a popular choice to have at home. First grown more than 1,000 years ago, they have exposed roots and oval, dark green leaves and need a steady temperature, humidity and lots of light.
