10 Autumn Facts from Appleyard London

With Autumn fast approaching, we have picked out 10 fascinating facts. Take a read and enjoy!

1)      In early Autumn, the sun becomes aligned with the centre point between the North and the South of the planet. Therefore, the number of hours between light and dark are exactly the same. This is referred to as equinox which will take place on 23rd September 2014.

2)      Animals begin to prepare for the cold Winter months: bears prepare by eating more to put on extra body fat to help keep warm, whereas squirrels collect food and store it so they have enough food to live off.

3)      Halloween is one of the great events of the Autumn season – Bobbing for Apples is one theme associated with Halloween, but it is actually a Roman tradition. It was the Celtic Samhain Festival and the Harvest Festival (which is now known as Halloween) which merged together and here is where Apple Bobbing was created.

4)      The colours typically associated with Halloween are black and orange.  Black is the symbol of darkness and reminds us that Halloween was once a festival about life and death whilst the orange represents strength and endurance as well as harvest and autumn.

5)      Autumn is graced with its very own full moon called the ‘Harvest Moon’ which is the full moon closest to the Autumn equinox.

6)      As the weather deteriorates and the wind picks up, a recognisable image is a person struggling to control their umbrella. But did you know umbrellas were originally invented 4,000 years ago to provide shade from the sun.

7     Autumn spans over September, October and November.

8)      Plants use the sunlight throughout the year to create nutrients for themselves, which allows them to keep their vibrant green colour. In Autumn, the amount of sunlight each day decreases which consequently means they stop producing nutrients, causing a colour defect. Yellow and oranges sit below the green all the time so when the green is taken away, other colours begin to show. The red and browns we often associate with Autumn are made up of wastes and nutrients that are trapped within the flower.

9)      Evergreen trees remain green through the winter because they have waxy leaves which do not freeze.

10)    During this period birds prepare for winter migration. One of the longest migrations is the 11,000 mile journey by the Arctic Tern.
