British Flower Week 2014

The second annual British Flowers Week is due to kick off this coming Monday. The British Flowers Week is a week-long celebration of the wealth and variety of the best of British cut flowers and foliage. The event itself is held at the New Covent Garden Flower Market, and is a must see event if you’re a lover of flowers like we are.

In recent years, British flowers have seen a long-awaited resurgence in interest, but still over 90% of flowers sold in the UK are still imported. At Appleyard London we’re keen to support British trade and the British flower, so where possible we source our flowers from British Growers.

In the spirit of British, we though we'd put together our favourite flowers that can be grown in your garden at home and are used in our bouquets.

  1. Hydrangea - Delicate flowers which come in shade of pink, white and blue they come into bloom between late spring and late autumn and are very popular amongst the British gardening community. We use hydrangeas in our 'Strawberry Smoothie' and 'Forget Me Not' bouquets, which are both in our summer flowers range.
  2. Peony -  A large and hardy flower, the peony blooms in shades of white, pink and red which can add an element of romance to any garden or rockery. Their vivid colours can also provide depth to garden borders and cut flower material in spring and summer. Our 'Pomegranate Rose & Peony' bouquet, also in our summer flowers range, is a great example of how to use the Peony.
  3. Lavender - The easiest of flowers to grow in your garden at home, they require virtually no maintenance. As an evergreen shrub that produces beautifully scented flowers, lavender thrives in pretty much all areas of your garden including sunny borders, containers and gravel gardens. Our 'Summer Lavender' bouquet in our scented flowers range delicately highlights the versatility of this flower.
  4. Agapanthus - Also known as the "African Lily", the agapanthus commonly bloom in shades of blue, purple, white and pink and are grown for their showery flowers. Thriving in the sunshine, these easy maintenance flowers come into bloom between mid summer and and early autumn. We make good use of the agapanthus in our 'Summer Coulis' bouquet which is in our seasonal flowers range.
