The Royal Ascot Style Guide: What & What Not To Wear

Royal Ascot is a huge date in the racing calendar, and an even bigger date in the fashion one. Whether you’re living it up in the Royal Enclosure, or you’re slumming it in the Grandstand, deciding what to wear is sure to give you a headache or two leading up to the first day.

Since 2012, Royal Ascot has looked to reintroduce the style befitting such a prestigious event, and as a result enforced a stricter dress code for parts of the course. If you’re thinking you might be able to ‘wing-it’ on the style front this year, think again. The course now employ a fleet of extremely well dressed fashion police that cast their discerning eye over the outfits of guests as they arrive.

So, what exactly can and can’t you wear? Well, there is an official dress code for the event which you can view by clicking here.

So that’s covered what you can and can’t wear, but what should you concentrate on in terms of style? That’s where the fashionistas in the Appleyard London office come into their own. Just for you, they have put together their style dos and dont's for Royal Ascot 2014...

  1. A general rule of thumb is that you should think about your silhouette as a whole instead at your outfit as separate elements.
  2. Ladies should wear their hair up, although if you prefer to wear it down make sure you keep it away from your face.
  3. Do not, in any scenario, wear sunglasses with a hat.
  4. Your hat should complement your face. For example, if you have a more rounded face, wear an angular hat.
  5. Cocktail hats should be pointed down towards your eyebrow.
  6. Your hat should be in proportion to your face and build.
  7. Finally, your choice of hat can make or break your outfit. Make sure you’re advised well on your hat.

Essentially, the lessons learnt from previous Ascot meetings is that less is more. Don’t trowel on more and more in the hope that this will enhance your appearance. Lengthen your hem, lower your heels and keep your skin tone looking natural. That means no orange!
