How to Celebrate Mother's Day in Lockdown

Mother’s Day 2021 falls on Sunday 14th March, when the whole of the UK will still be under coronavirus lockdown rules.

There’s good news if you and your mum live locally as, from Monday 8th March, it will be legal to meet one other person socially in a public outdoor space. Otherwise, you’ll need to get inventive and celebrate together from afar.

Don’t panic, we’ve done the hard graft for you and come up with some fun, thoughtful and memorable ways to show her how much you care, whatever the distance between you. Let’s get you firmly into Mum’s good books!

Make her cry happy tears with a homemade video

Let’s hope your mum has tissues to hand for this one, as it’s sure to make her cry - in a good way! Cobble together some of your favourite family photos and clips into a video that you can email to her on Mother’s Day. It’ll make her miss you even more, of course, but it’ll also remind her of how many more exciting, love-filled times there are to come once this gruelling pandemic blows over. If you’re not techy or prefer the handmade touch, consider compiling a scrapbook and popping it in the post for her to flick through and keep forever.

Bake brownies ‘together’

Set up a video call with your mum and bake brownies, cookies or fairy cakes in your respective kitchens. Minimise stress by sending her a parcel of all the dry ingredients she’ll need before the big day, including icing and sprinkles for decorating. That’s the part everybody looks forward to, after all! Be sure to glean lots of motherly tips and tricks as you bake, before gobbling up the tasty results over a good old-fashioned tea and gossip.

Send her a big bunch of blooms

Flowers never go out of fashion and a beautiful bouquet makes a timeless, failsafe gift for good reason. Deliveries have a pesky habit of arriving just after the recipient goes out, but one upside to lockdown is that Mum is more likely to be in! Our Mother’s Day range features everything from classic roses and lilies to exotic orchids and divinely-scented hyacinths, with everything available for Sunday delivery. Spring is in the air, with daffodils and tulips ripe for the picking, or you can bring a smile to Mum’s face every month by signing her up to our gift subscription

Sync a Netflix movie night

Cuddling up with your mum for a Big Night In might be illegal right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to give it a miss entirely! The free Tele Party Chrome extension lets you sync Netflix sessions, with a chatroom function for discussing all the twists and turns of your chosen movie. Choose a film with a mother-child relationship at its heart, such as Mamma Mia! or opt for a flick that exudes girl power, like Steel Magnolias, Erin Brockovich or Ocean’s 8 - all four are currently on Netflix! For an extra special touch, send Mum our Deluxe Chocolate Heaven Hamper to tuck into while she watches. Featuring truffles, popcorn and biccies made by independent producers, it’s any chocoholic’s dream come true.

Share a luxury afternoon tea

Meeting at the same table is sadly off the table, but you and your mum can still indulge in the finest tea, fizz and sweet treats together over a video call. Our mouthwatering Mum’s Afternoon Tea hamper comes with organic Prosecco, traditional English tea, soft almond dolcetti, chocolate and orange cantuccini, choccy truffles and more. There are cocktails and Pinot Grigio versions too, each packaged in a stylish jute bag and delivered to her door. The best bit is that she’ll want someone to share it with, so you’ll have to order one for yourself too...

Take her for a picnic

If you’re lucky enough to be able to see your mum while adhering to the government’s guidelines, pack up a yummy picnic and take her to a local beauty spot. If she’s an active type, combine your brunch or lunch with a leisurely walk or bike ride. Or, if you live near the sea, perhaps a bracing swim may be on the cards? Whatever your outdoor pursuit of choice, don’t forget the Prosecco for raising a toast!

Host a virtual flower arranging session

Many of us have been getting creative at our kitchen tables during lockdown, and a spot of flower arranging makes a fun at-home Mother’s Day activity. Simply browse our selection of letterbox flowers, choose some in your mum’s preferred colour palette (we love the cheerful Frangipan) and order them to arrive on Mother’s Day. Send yourself some too, in a different style if you wish, and host a Zoom session once you’ve both received your stems. Mum will enjoy spending some quality virtual time with you, before enjoying her flowers for at least seven days afterwards.

Enjoy a cheese and wine tasting

Sunday afternoons pair perfectly with cheese and wine, and if your mum enjoys both, you’re onto a winner. Send our delicious Cheese and Wine Luxury Hamper to both Mum and yourself, before tasting the three artisan English cheeses (farmhouse cheddar, oak-smoked cheddar and goat cheese cheddar) and Los Medanos malbec red wine at the same time on a video call. Expect notes of spicy plum, chocolate and dark fruit from the vino, and did we mention the poppyseed crackers and red onion marmalade? Mmmm!

Organise a family games night

Mum’s going to have to wait a while longer for a full family get-together, but you can bring all the banter to her living room in the form of a virtual games night. There are plenty of great games that can be played over a video call, including Pictionary, Codenames, Heads Up! and Scattergories. Or if all else fails or chaos ensues, there’s always the ever popular Charades.

Our stunning range of Mother’s Day flowers features an abundant bouquet to suit all tastes and budgets, including pink roses, yellow daffodils and white orchids. Order early for the pick of the bunch and save up to £20.
