How To Create A Beautiful Spring Table Decoration

Bring some colour into your home with our step-by-step guide of how to create a gorgeous spring table decoration.

Spring is here! Although we can't always rely on the British weather to show it. Brighten up any room in your house or create the perfect gift for a birthday or special occasion. All designed and photographed by Appleyard London's Head Florist Lauren Probert, official florist of the 2012 London Olympic games.

To create a beautiful spring table decoration you will need:

  • An 8 inch Oasis Posy Pad Frame
  • Cuttings of Spring flowers: think tulips, anemone, hyacinths and ranunculus
  • Salix (or twigs).

For the oasis posy pad frame, an 8 inch one is a sensible size for the average table. You will be able to get these either from your local florist or craft centre. Most do seem to have a small stock of floristry sundries nowadays.

For the prettiest results I have used Salix, however, you could easily use twigs and cuttings from your garden. I have chosen a selection of Spring favourites of tulips, anemone, hyacinths and ranunculus but feel free to choose whatever are your favourite stems and colour way. I have embraced the joys of Spring and used vibrant flowers. Again these will be a available from your local florist.

Step 1: Start by soaking your oasis frame in water. Do this by filling your sink up quite high with fresh water. Put the absorbent side down on the surface of the water and let it slowly absorb the water in. Don't rush this step and push down because this will create air bubbles in your oasis and you'll risk having no water for the flowers to drink. When it has sank completely, this means it's taken all the water in it can and it'll be quite heavy.

Step 2: Now you're ready to create your nest base. I stared by cutting off the top selections of the salix because this is more bendy. I looped the salix in and around the oasis frame, I cut the harder bottom of the Salix into small sections and added it to the gaps to create a spiked nest.

Step 3: Once I was happy with my built up nest, I was ready to add my spring flowers. I cut all my stems to the right length so they would sit at a 45 degree angle just above the salix rim. I added each stem individually around the edge of the frame and repeated this to cover the gap so it eventually gets smaller. Keep the dome shape and also be sure to keep an eye on texture and colour placement so it is evenly distributed throughout the arrangement.

Once you have totally filled the gap your arrangement is ready to enjoy and show off.
