7 Tips To Extend The Life Of Cut Flowers

There are very few things that can easily and effectively brighten a room like a fresh bunch of freshly cut flowers. Not only do they look and smell sublime, but your choice and colours of your cut flowers can really add depth to your room.

Whether you've got a gorgeous bouquet of roses on show from your significant other, a summer flowers bouquet of potent lavender, or a thoughtful bouquet of birthday flowers from your 'bestie', you want to get the most out of your cut flowers to keep them lasting longer and looking like they were freshly picked yesterday.

Tip #1 - Keep Your Cut Flowers in a Cool Dry Place.

Cut flowers last far longer in cooler environments. The cooler the temperature, the longer your cut flowers will last. It's as simple as that! Keep your cut flowers out of direct sunlight and away from fireplaces, and obviously ensure that their water supply is kept at room temperature.

Tip #2 - Care For Your Flowers in Transit.

Ensuring that your flowers are well cared for in transit is an often overlooked, but vitally important part of ensuring your cut flowers last. At Appleyard all our flowers are carefully packaged to ensure that they arrive at your door in perfect condition. To read more about our flower delivery service, click here.

Tip #3 - Stem Care.

By removing the flowers greenery from the bottom of the stems that will be submerged in water will help to keep the water clearer, allowing your cut flowers to keep for longer. Trimming 1-2 inches off the stems under running water (or in a bowl of water) at a 45 degree angle will further help extend the life of your cut flowers. The reason this needs to be done under water is that it prevents additional air getting into the stems. By trimming a little bit from the stems every couple of days, you help the flowers to continually receive a steady flow of nutrients and water.

Tip #4 - Use The Correct Utensils.

Depending on the thickness of the stems, you should use either a very sharp knife to keep the cut as smooth as possible or, for woodier thicker stems, you can also use sharp garden sheers.

Tip #5 - Use a Spotless Vase.

You MUST ensure that the vase you are using has been washed in hot, soapy water and rinsed fully. This helps to ensure that any micro-organisms that may harm the flowers have been competely removed from the vase. If the vase is not washed properly, the water will become brown, smelly and slimy and your flowers will die.

Tip #6 - Feed Your Cut Flowers.

Flowers, just like us, need a good feed to survive. You can buy plant food from most local florists and supermarkets, but when you buy flowers online from Appleyard we include a complimentary sachet of feed to ensure your luxury flowers are looking like new a week down the line.

Tip #7 - Mist Your Bouquet.

As well as daily changing your flowers supply of water, your cut flowers will also appreciate a daily mist of water.
