‘Tis the season to be jolly! For anyone who loves entertaining, that means inviting friends and family over for a festive dinner party filled with good food, great company and, yes, fabulous flowers, of course.
Come December, our diaries are dominated by social events, making it all the more important to give your guests a night to remember. To stand out from the crowd, we like to get creative with our tablescaping, using seasonal blooms to bring some colourful personality, fun and style to the evening.
From the simple and low-effort (but still stunning) to the more ambitious and show-stopping, there are plenty of ways to wow your loved ones using flowers this Christmas. Ready to be the host with the most? Read on for our top tablescaping tips…
Embrace the traditional Christmas theme
Red, green, gold and silver – this is the official Christmas colour palette, and if you love it as much as we do, don’t feel you have to steer away from the traditional to make a stylish splash. Lean into the classic with much-loved amaryllis, red roses and hydrangeas, paired with lashings of fir, pine or cedar for that nostalgic festive fragrance we all know and love. This décor theme works especially well when you’ve asked your guests to dress up in their finery, ready to sip Champagne, dig into some baked Camembert and finish with a crumbly mince pie and brandy cream. It’s what Christmas is all about!

Play with height for maximum impact
Keep your tablescape dynamic and dramatic by mixing and matching the height of your floral arrangements. Just make sure that no flowers are displayed at head level when sitting down; lovely as they’ll surely be, your guests will also want to see the person opposite them! Combine vases, bowls and glasses of different shapes and sizes for a rustic, homely feel, and elevate hat boxes and centrepieces with cake stands. Try this professional styling trick and your dining table will look like it’s stepped straight out of an interiors magazine.
Use posies as place settings
Treat each guest to a festive favour by tying a handwritten name tag to a miniature bunch of your favourite blooms, making mini bouquets with kraft paper, or tucking a minimalist single stem into a napkin. Baby’s breath, spray carnations and eucalyptus are some of our go-tos, or you could opt for fail-safe red or white roses. Use velvet ribbon for a sophisticated finishing touch that’s sure to win you compliments.

Fruit, fabulous fruit
Fruit might not be flowers per se, but it’s another striking way to bring natural colour and texture to your tablescape. Bunches of burgundy grapes and oranges studded with cloves will add some indulgent – and edible! – opulence to proceedings, while we also love shiny red apples spiked with pearl-headed pins. Plums, pears and pomegranates make great conversation-starters, too, and don’t forget glossy berries – holly, hypericum and mistletoe are particularly popular at Christmas.
Bring the outside in
Everybody dreams of escaping the Christmas chaos and hiding away in a snowy cabin in the woods, if only for a little while. So, why not recreate that cosy vibe at home? The trick is to make natural elements the foundation of your tablescape; think moss, pinecones, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks and plenty of forest foliage. Hellebores, also known as Christmas roses, are perfect for adding softness and a fairytale feel. Serve your food on wooden boards, using linen napkins and amber glassware to keep things feeling warm and inviting. Light a crackling log fire and your guests will never want to leave!

Flex your DIY skills
Get crafty on a chilly weekend morning and involve the whole family. Try making mini wreaths to sit at the base of pillar candles (all you need is florist’s wire, scissors and your choice of flowers and foliage) or floral Christmas trees using the affordable foam cones you can find in craft shops and online – simply cut your chosen stems short and stick them into position. For a unique take-home idea, you could also fill clear, openable baubles with dried flowers.
Once your guests have left for the night, display your works of art elsewhere in your home to give all your elfish efforts more mileage.
Order a ready-made centrepiece
Too busy tidying the house, ordering food and wrapping gifts to faff about with flowers? We get it, and we’ve got you covered. Our huge Christmas collection features everything from bouquets, wreaths and garlands to luxury table centres and hat boxes. There are six enchanting themes to browse, from Mulled Wine to Frosty Mist, making decorating for the festive season an enjoyable breeze. Nobody needs to know you called in a favour; your secret’s safe with us.

Oh, Christmas tree!
Mini Christmas trees have boomed in popularity in recent years, thanks to their ability to bring a jolly touch to even the smallest spaces. Use yours as a centrepiece, or pop one at either end of the table. Ours come already decorated with baubles, ribbon and fairy lights, ready to show off. Choose from five festive colours to match your tablescape. They also make thoughtful gifts to send to anyone who wasn’t able to attend the party.
Build a winter wonderland
As tempting as it is to dive into all the joyful colours of Christmas, nothing exudes elegance like keeping to a pared-back, all-white palette. There’s just something so timelessly beautiful about creamy petals contrasted with dark green foliage, especially when paired with glittering glassware, flickering candles and crisp white linen. From hellebores to hydrangeas, roses to ranunculus, there are plenty of angelic white blooms to play with this December. For an extra touch of Narnia, mix in some ‘snowy’ frosted pinecones and fir leaves.

Mirror, mirror on the table
Display your arrangements on mirrors or other reflective surfaces for double the impact. This clever party trick can give the illusion that your blooms are floating on a crystal-clear lake and help create the glamorous vibe of a five-star hotel lounge. For extra chic points, stick to a single species of flower for a contemporary, sleek effect that’s bound to impress discerning guests. Can’t choose? Try using only foliage or adhering to one colour, be it celebrity-favourite white or bold Santa red.
