1. The names of Santa’s 8 original reindeer are: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Rudolph was the 9th reindeer to join Santa’s Sleigh.

2. Each year more than 3 billion Christmas cards are sent in the U.S. alone.

3. The traditional three colours of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.

4. The average shopper will walk 5 miles around shopping centres and car parks whilst doing Christmas shopping.

5. 1 in 3 men begin their Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve! Are you guilty?

6. If you were to receive all of the gifts listed in “The Twelve Days Of Christmas” song, you would be gifted a total of 364 presents.

7. Christmas stockings are said to have evolved from three sisters who were too poor to afford new clothes, presents and food for their table. However, they were saved when the wealthy Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna climbed down their chimney before filling their stockings with gold coins.

10. The modern day portrayal that Santa Claus wears a red coat only became standard in the 1920’s. Before this, he wore blue, purple and green coats.

14. Last Christmas saw the UK consume approximately 10 million turkeys.

16. 86% of people in a survey rated spending time with close ones as the best thing about Christmas. 7% quotes time off work, 3% suggested the food and only 2% said presents. Maybe they haven’t heard of Appleyard London’s Christmas Flowers?

17. The Christmas movie ‘Grinch’ features more than 52,000 Christmas lights, 8,200 Christmas ornaments and almost 2000 pieces of candy. Who counted this?

18. A Christmas wreath hanging on your front door symbolises a sign of welcome and long life for all who enter. We need to start selling Christmas wreaths!

19. Boxing Day is the 26th December following Christmas Day on the 25th. The day derives from a Christmas gift or money going to the poor on this day. People would place items into church boxes – leading to the name Boxing Day.

20. The famous poem ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ was written in 1822 by Clement Clarke Moore. It was originally called ‘A visit From St Nicholas’.
