5 Of The Most Inspiring Mothers In The World

Yesterday was International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year on 8th March. It allows women all over the world to unite and celebrate equality. To tie in with the theme of powerful ladies, we are edging closer and closer to Mother's day. Here, at Appleyard London, we wanted to outline the most inspiring mothers in the world today and what they have been through to be where they are now.

Although the most famous Mother to pop into your head may be someone along the lines of Mother Theresa, she never actually had children! Neither did Anna Jarvis, the lady who founded Mother's day in the United States of America. The likes of Beyonce and Kim Kardashian being famous mothers are obvious, they are both busy ladies but not the inspiration we are looking for!

So we've narrowed it down to the 5 most influential living Mothers today around the world.

1. Katie Piper

Where do we start with this lady? A beautiful model with a potential career in the media ahead of her, all destroyed by a jealous ex boyfriend. On March 31 2008, industrial strength sulphuric acid was hurled into Katie's face on a busy London street and disfigured her beyond recognition. Some of the acid even slipped down her throat and she suffered further terrible consequences too. As you can imagine this completely destroyed her life. Since the incident, Katie has pushed through some of the darkest days that no one should ever have to encounter. After her Channel 4 documentary 'My Beautiful Face' in 2009, she has gone on to present her own TV show 'Body shockers', founded a charity 'The Katie Piper Foundation' and is a Mother to a beautiful baby girl. She continues to be a huge influence to people who have been involved in accidents or disfigurements for her outstanding come back and lust for life.

2. Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama is such an incredible woman and mother. She wouldn't let Barack Obama run for president unless he gave up smoking! Her morals and charity work go beyond influential. Michelle impressed the world with her first overseas trip to the UK in 2009, in which she spoke passionately about the importance of education and the values of social responsibility and sensible decision making for young people, on a visit to a London girls school. Michelle's family ancestry involves slavery, and her own personal upbringing is a tale of achievement from a poor background. Despite being brought up in a neighbourhood in Chicago in modest circumstances, she went on to achieve great academic success and fulfilled her potential.

3. J.K Rowling

Twenty years, seven books and blockbuster films later, the Harry Potter brand, valued at over £10 billion, is still going strong. Over 400 million copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold worldwide and translated into 67 languages, making Rowling the first billionaire author. While living on state welfare, Rowling was given a £1,500 advance from her publishers to write Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1995. She was advised by her publishing company to get a day job as financial success for the book was slim. They call it a 'Rags to Riches' life. J.K Rowling has come from such struggle and made it to be one of the most important authors of the 20th and 21st century.

4. Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne's life story is extremely inspiring and her Autobiography is a great read. Her early years with Ozzy Osbourne saw her battle drug and alcohol addictions as well as helping Ozzy, Kelly and Jack with their drug problems. They got through their darkest days and Sharon has gone on to manage rock bands, such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Ozzy's solo career and her daughter Kelly. She survived MTV's invasive reality TV show 'The Osbournes'. Before filming started on the second season of the show, Sharon Osbourne discovered that she had colon cancer. Rather than cancel the show, Sharon allowed cameras to film her treatment. Osbourne had surgery, and eventually entered remission. After her recovery, she established the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation to help others battling the disease. She is still in the eyes of US and UK TV shows and continues to inspire women around the world for everything she's been through and remaining to be the all important Osbournes family rock.

5. Davina McCall
