House Plants

House plants are a great gift for those with green thumbs - they’re fun to look after and grow, with each plant having its own unique care requirements. They enrich your home environment, with studies showing that being around plants can boost your mood, aid concentration, relieve stress, and even purify the air. Furthermore, they last longer than flowers; many plants can live for years as long as they are cared for properly, and will continue to grow bigger over time.

For beginners, we recommend picking a plant that has simpler care requirements, such as a ZZ or Yucca plant. Both of these plants are drought tolerant and can also handle neglect. Other low maintenance plants include aloe vera, snake plants, and spider plants. Tropical plants such as our monstera obliqua, calathea, and Boston fern can be a little fussier and require more care, so might be a better choice for people who have more experience with plants, or have the time to make sure they’re looked after properly.

We strongly recommend not buying a lily plant for people who have cats, as lily pollen is extremely toxic to cats.

Try to keep all plants out of reach of your pets where possible, as some animals like to nibble on leaves and this can damage the plant.

Every plant variety has different needs, but there are some general guidelines you can follow. Most house plants prefer bright, indirect light, such as on an east facing windowsill. South facing and west facing windows can also work, but keep the plant further away from the window to prevent the leaves becoming scorched.

Remember that overwatering can be just as dangerous to plants as underwatering. For most plants, you will want to let the top layer of soil dry out before watering again. However, tropical plants such as ferns and calatheas will require more moisture and humidity, whilst arid plants such as yuccas and ZZ plants prefer to dry out completely. You may also wish to fertilise your plant occasionally to help encourage growth.
