A little bit about the history of Mother's Day...

Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday as it is more formally known, is a day where we come together and celebrate just how amazing our mothers are. It is a day to recognise hard work, unbreakable bonds and how mothers have been influential within society.

In the UK we have been celebrating Mother's Day since the 16th century, however the meaning of Mothering Sunday back then was a celebration of the church. On this day every year everybody in society would attend church, reuniting mothers with their children that they may not have seen for a full year due to being held under a master. This is where our modern day Mother's Day celebration has originated from.

The United States of America and other countries all have many different stories about powerful or influential women that have lead to creating the national holiday Mother's Day.

So, when is Mother's Day in the UK?

In the UK we celebrate Mother's Day in March, however it is different for countries throughout the world, with most others celebrating in May. We have Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of lent every year, leading it to fall early to mid March, in line with the Christian calendar date of Laetare Sunday. This year we will be celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday 27th March 2022.
