Pumpkin Vase Tutorial
What You'll Need
• Flowers
• Pumpkin
• Small vase or jar
• Knife
• Scissors
• Spoon
• Bleach
• Vaseline
1. Carve the pumpkin
To begin, you'll need to carve the pumpkin. Cut off the top to create an opening large enough to fit your vase or jar inside. Spoon out the inside of the pumpkin, taking care to remove all the seeds.
2. Put the pumpkin in a bleach bath
Place the carved pumpkin into a bucket of bleach and water, with 1 teaspoon of bleach per gallon. This will help to kill any mould or bacteria and stop the pumpkin from rotting. You should leave it in the bleach bath for twenty to thirty minutes.
3. Coat the inside of the pumpkin with Vaseline
Remove the pumpkin from the bleach bath, and then coat the inside of the pumpkin with Vaseline. This seals in the moisture and helps your pumpkin to last longer.
4. Insert the vase
Fill your vase or jar with water, and place it inside the pumpkin. If you have flower food, you can also add this to the water at this stage.
Make sure to place the pumpkin vase on a mat or tray to protect your surfaces, as the pumpkin will eventually break down.
5. Arrange your flowers
Your pumpkin vase is ready, so it's time to add your flowers! We used our Pumpkin Pie bouquet, but any of our autumn blooms will look lovely and create a stunning rustic look. Trim your stems, and then start inserting the flowers into the vase.
First, add any foliage such as oak leaves, berries, and wheat to create the base for your display. Next, add the larger blooms like sunflowers, hydrangeas, and chrysanthemums. Finally, spread the smaller filler flowers throughout your arrangement, taking care to fill in any gaps around the top of the pumpkin.
