Flowers Delivered in Gospel Oak

Gospel Oak is located at the southernmost end of Hampstead Heath, and with regular flower delivery Gospel Oak families can live up to the name of an area intrinsically linked with its plantlife. As the name suggests, this area grew around an oak tree, beneath which parishioners from across the then-rural surrounding region would gather to hear bible readings. The oak itself was marked on maps until the early 1800s, but was eventually removed; attempts to replace it with a new oak tree in the late 1990s failed as the tree did not survive.

This is an area whose history is one of change, though - dating back at least as far as around the year 1000, it was for a long time referred to as South End Green, due to its position in relation to Hampstead Heath. Only in the 1700s did its name change to pay homage to the ill-fated oak tree, while beneath the ground flows the River Fleet - from which Fleet Street takes its name - on its hidden journey to the Thames.
