London has 32 modern-day boroughs created in the 1960s, as well as the City of London itself, but when it comes to flower delivery Borough typically refers to Southwark, and has been a nickname for the Central London district for many years. This is in spite of the fact that Southwark's name has been largely unchanged for a millennium or more; in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Sudweca, literally translating as something like 'southern fort'.

But Borough residents have always been keen to highlight the area's distinctiveness from the nearby City of London, and they have plenty to be proud of. The area is home to The Tabard, the inn that provides the starting point for the pilgrimage described in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. It is also home to the modern-day Shakespeare's Globe theatre, which attempts to stage productions as they would have been performed in Shakespeare's own time; and was also home to the original Globe Theatre, built in 1599 and rebuilt in 1614 after the original was destroyed by fire.
