As crazy as it may sound, there are more than 400,000 species of flowering plants in the world!
Flowers are fascinating; It is believed that different flowers are associated with unique symbolism and purposes, giving each individual flower a special meaning.
Titan Arum
Titan Arum are the world’s largest; almost 10ft in height! The circumference of their huge flowers can be over 3 meters, with a single leaf able to grow to the size of a small tree. But don’t go in a hurry to own one of these giants as they contain a horrible smell of rotten flesh, resembling the name the ‘corpse flower.’
Tulip Bulbs
Do you agree that Tulip Bulbs look like onions? Well onions can actually be replaced with Tulip Bulbs! In the 17th Century Holland, these little beauties were more valuable than gold! They were so precious they became as expensive as to be treated as a form of currency. The flower symbolised immortality, life and love.
Lotus
In Ancient Egyptian times, Lotus was considered a scared flower and therefore was used on burial rituals. Egyptians viewed this as a symbol of resurrection and external life, whilst others viewed the Lotus as purity, beauty and grace.
Rose
Believe it or not, Roses are used to make jam, jellies and also brewed teas, due to their high amount Vitamin C. In Ancient Egypt, Roses were considered scared flowers, just like the Lotus. But instead of burial rituals, Roses were used during funerals to form a beautiful wreath on the tomb stone.
Blue Cohosh
Blue Cohosh flowers were used by Native American women to ensure labour and childbirth, strange I know. But it is believed even today midwives may use Blue Cohosh in the last month of pregnancy to tone the uterus in preparation for labour.
Flowers are remarkable gifts of nature, intriguing us with their unique beauty, scents and extraordinary purposes. So who wouldn’t want a bunch of flowers in their home?
